Fueled by the musicality so prominent in the play, we incorporated a live doo-wop ensemble between several scenes. The actors however simply didn’t have the time to learn and perfect the complex harmonies.
Through overdubbed recordings and creative playback, we effectively faked the difficult performances. Only the lead melody was sung live, while the harmony was played through a concealed loudspeaker and seamlessly mimed by the backup singers (not shown).
Written by August Wilson, Fences is a Pulitzer and Tony award winning drama, following an African-American family in the 1950s as they deal with disappointment, denial, desperation, and the coming of change.
